Alter Egos A Gogo

You’d think that if you were a multi millionaire, double-triple-quadruple platinum selling, award winning, recording R&B songstress, with a wardrobe bigger than your house and an EPIC rear end to delight rappers and turn women green with envy, you’d be quite satisfied with who you are. However it seems that the weight of such accomplishments is too much to bear alone. Either that or it induces a new level of self-obsession so the only solution is to find someone to share them with and that someone is, erm…yourself. Something compels women such as Beyonce into creating an alter ego to gain double the attention. Alter egos are all the rage these days. It seems that JUST being yourself is simply not enough so more artists are taking lead from Beyonce Knowles/Sasha Fierce and creating an alter ego for themselves. Maybe thick thighs and a giant back-off have something to do with this because the latest lady to have adopted and alternative personality is Jennifer Lopez.

When Beyonce Knowles first announced Sasha Fierce I for one was very confused. She was quoted as saying, “Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I’m working and when I’m on the stage.” The thing that makes this comment generally invalid is the fact that even in the Destiny’s Child days Beyonce has always been outspoken, glamorous and aggressive and everything else she claims “Sasha” embodies, so why the need for the creation of this strange character? She is obviously not alone in adopting a personality for work purposes – even us “normal” people change according to our surroundings. I understand that when you’re performing on stage in front of thousands of people it’s inevitable that you’re going to act differently and psych yourself up to entice your audience but an alter ego? Really?  The only obvious difference is the amount of eyeliner she wears and the weird robotic moves she likes to buss in her latest videos so what’s the point?

When it comes to La Lopez – a mid-thirties mum of two who’s career ended faster than her relationship with P.Diddy, perhaps it’s more understandable. Maybe she thought that by adapting an alternative persona in the form of “Lola” it might reignite people’s interest in something other than the size of her bum. Let’s face it her music has never been anything spectacular and the fascination with J.Lo has been more to do with her failing relationships than her ability to hit the high notes. She recently recorded a track with Pitbull called “Fresh Out The Oven” which is off her forthcoming album set to be released in the new year called “Love” and she is releasing it under the name of her alter ego. Maybe she thinks that by becoming Lola she will magically become a good singer? Someone needs to tell J.Lo to stick to what she does best – wearing tight dresses and presenting the odd award at various ceremonies. “Lola” is already an epic fail.

I don’t really understand the concept of alter egos generally. I mean I can understand it if your alter ego does something different to what the “real” you does, or does something the “real” you couldn’t get away with doing, but the point is theirs really don’t so I don’t understand what they gain from it? I can’t wait until I’m famous R&B singer. I’m going to jump on the alter ego bandwagon too. The only thing left for me to do now is to launch my career, decide on a name and then create another version of myself. My alter ego is going to do something completely different than sing R&B songs and shake her bum faster than normal-she’s going to be amazing. Watch this space.
