London Fashion Week ...
by Guy Purssell
At the beginning of a new year I generally ponder what will have happened in 12 months time, and I can tell you quite honestly walking down a catwalk at London Fashion Week was certainly not one of the ones I had foreseen. So a good 9 and a bit months later, to find myself walking down a catwalk, with lights, cameras and hundreds of eyes focusing on me was bizarre to say the very least.
.
It was an amazing experience, no question. From the minute I was scouted at 1234 Festival in Shoreditch Park to model for 1.Wo/Man, a very large proportion of my thoughts were on London Fashion Week. 1.Wo/Man are a group of young budding designers, taken on by the BBC Blast, starting with minimal experience, only to excel and put on their own show at London Fashion Week. That was something that I’m proud to have been part of.
All members of 1.Wo/Man were absolutely lovely, and incredibly motivated. It is evident that they all have bright futures ahead of them. They stated in their manifesto that ‘conformity does not interest us’ and quite clearly their outstanding outfits did not conform, an example of this was the blue jumpsuit I modelled. I turned up at around midday at the venue – 180 The Strand . Yet this wasn’t the first arrival, no. I had to “arrive” a good few times for the cameras!
.
The atmosphere backstage was electric, it was the culmination of a lot of hard work for the whole of 1.Wo/Man.
We were told not to smile, but don’t look gloomy and don’t look at anyone. Some found it harder than others, but it definitely went without a single hindrance.
Walking down the catwalk feels like you’re dancing – you’re following the beat of the music blaring out over the PA. The experience was one that I am more than eager to have again – it is all rather addictive.
1.Wo/Man are planning on putting on another show next year, which is definitely something to look forward to, especially as they have already embraced the idea of me modelling again for them!
I’m sure that their designs will one day be underpinning the world of fashion and style.
