The Answering Machine 26th November

BOXING_POSTER-1

Sameteens link up with The Answering Machine and gear up for a fantastic gig on the 26th November 2009!!

By Aimee Smith & Nancy Rose

2009 has indeed been an eventful and not to mention successful year for The Answering Machine. This is why they have launched their amazing November Gig this year with support that they have chosen themselves from Post War Years and not forgetting The Crookes and Sameteens DJ’s.

Plus you can get the chance to WIN tickets to the gig, signed albums and some Boxfresh goodies courtesy of Boxfresh, The Answering Machine and Sameteens.

We’ve got 2 pairs of tickets to the gig, signed Answering Machine albums and some dead good Boxfresh T-shirts and £50 to spend on the Boxfresh website which could be coming your way!

Just answer this question:

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE DEARLY DEPARTED DRUM MACHINE THE ANSWERING MACHINES USED TO USE?

Send your answers to sameteenscentral@yahoo.com and we’ll pick the winners by next Wednesday (18th Nov) so hurry up guys! You don’t want to miss this!

We caught up with The Answering Machine to have a chat about what they have been upto recently…

Sameteens: You’ve just been in New York – what was the most Rock’n'Roll thing you go up to and what was the least Rock’n'Roll?

The Answering Machine: We went to the real Coyote Ugly on 9th in the East Village! That was a blast, the girls dance on the bar every half hour and you do shots from
their mouths, that was pretty rock and roll. We also got a private viewing of Ryan Adams’ exhibition on Bowery in the back of an art gallery. The paintings were going back to LA the next day, it was such an immense experience.

Sameteens: Has the reaction to the album surprised you? We heard a track played in the background of an advert for a programme where Sarah Fergie went to a housing estate. Have you heard it soundtracking any other odd things – any other celebrity links?
The Answering Machine: It has! Especially in America and Japan, the album isn’t even out in those countries yet and people have gone (excuse the Manchester vocab) mad for it. It’s been great in the UK as well. We recently got included on the FIFA 2010 soundtrack, which is incredible exposure for us and so cool to be blasting around Old Trafford!

Sameteens: What words sum up the individual style of The Answering Machine best?
The Answering Machine: Indie, citygaze, urban space pop, white trash.

Sameteens: Any surprises in store for the gig? You did us a cover of Girls Aloud for our XOX Singles Club – who would you say was Cheryl and who is Nicola?
The Answering Machine: They’ll be lots of surprises. This is going to be more of a party than a gig, perhaps our manager will run around in a gorilla costume between bands? That’s the vibe we are laying down. I’d say Martin was more Cheryl, loves a bit of a strop and is the most likely to get in the tabloids for controversially assaulting members of the public. I’m more of a Nicola figure, a quiet, fair skinned rose.

Sameteens: What do you want for Christmas?
The Answering Machine: Nicola and Cheryl.

The Answering Machine taken by their manager Mick, how lovely!

The Answering Machine taken by their manager Mick, how lovely!

The Answering Machine were the fist showbiz friends of Same Teens and it’s like we’ve grown up together. We all shed a tear when Mustapha Beat their drum machine had his life support plug switched off, we all rejoiced when they adopted a boy called Ben who became their drummer – a move cynically copied by people like Madonna but first done by The Answering Machine. They’ve played for us at some amazing gigs in Kendal, Manchester and the tour of hostels we did with them – they gave us a track for the XOX Singles Club and did a takeover of XOX for a whole issue. We’ve repaid them by supplying handclaps on their XFM Session and we had a fantastic couple of nights where they supported The Charlatans and we DJ’d for them. Enough of this mutual backslapping though – they’ve chosen two of their favourite bands, The Crookes and Post War Years and their favourite DJs for a gig to remember

Sameteens recommend?

(Here are a few tracks by The Answering Machine we recommend to you, get on Myspace people!)

Its Over! Its Over! Its Over!

This is a gorgeous little track by these musical magicians, the rhythm really makes you want to get up and shimmy about the place. Beautifully upbeat and enough to make you fall in love with The Answering Machine!

Oklahoma

Theres something totally funky about this song, maybe the amazing sync of all the instruments and  vocals. This song will be on your iTunes, Windows Player, Quick Time Player, whatever you use as soon as the music taps away at your eardrums. Absolutely Fantastic!

Emergency

Emergency! Emergency! The Answering Machine have nailed it! This song is wonderfully heartfelt and so beautifully written. This one is guaranteed to pull on your heart strings.

After meeting up with The Answering Machine, we wanted to chat to the other bands that would be attending the gig, so we caught up with Post War Years, as The Answering Machines right hand men…

Sameteens: You’ve just played in Dubai. How was it – was it like a festival but in a desert or what?
Post War Years: Yes. Basically we just wandered around sweating for four days. We saw some good stuff though, our friends We Have Band and Wave Machines were playing too.Dubai is made entirely of gold coloured plastic. Our hotel had a big steam-room, so Fred and Tom spent most of their time in there… Henry and myself went camel hunting in the desert.

Sameteens: What band have you been compared to and thought ‘yeah, how cool’ and what band have people thought you sound like and thought ‘ewww’?
Post War Years: XTC by The Times [Cool], Manic Street Preachers by a Radio One DJ [Not Cool]. I don’t think we sound like either of these two bands.

Sameteens: If you were selling Post War Years like a film – what would the tag line be and who would be in it?
Post War Years: the tag line would be ‘The Pre-WarYears – The years before the Post War Years, after the war began, before the killing started in earnest’ and it would star Sir Patrick Stewart, Eric Cantona, Dame Judy Dench and Micheal Fox as children.

Sameteens: You’re supporting White Lies and you’ve got a song called White Lies – is the pressure on them to write one called Post War Years in time for the gig?
Post War Years: They stole the name of our song for their band. We’ve never quite forgiven them for that. They asked us to come on tour with them all around the globe for a year.. We said no because we were “washing our hair” that year. But then we felt a bit bad, so we told them that we’d play the Brixton gig as a polite gesture of good will.

Sameteens: We’re Djing at The Answering Machine gig- what track do you think can make a night whatever’s happening. Kind of like a smart bomb in your record box, one that can only be used once but a guarantee to have a great effect. Tim Burgess played Together In Electric Dreams when we DJ’d with him and it was like everyone became lovely for 4 minutes
See you at the gig!

Post War Years: ‘Moving Coils’ by Mysterons or “Looking out for Linda” by Hue and Cry please.

Wow,so what about The Crookes? We hear you cry! Dont you worry, we caught up with these guys as well and my,my,my they had some interesting things to say for themselves…

Sameteens: People need to get down to the gig in time to see Crookes. What would you say about the band to get people’s curiosity?
The Crookes: You’ll be disappointed if you were expecting a heavy shred-a-thon. If you like mild-mannered, polite and awkward banter then come on down!

Sameteens: Tell us something we don’t know about The Answering Machine?
The Crookes: Pat is generous with his offering of M&S flapjacks, but you probably knew that already.

Sameteens: Sheffield has had a history of producing great bands – what is it about the town – is everyone rock hard like Sean Bean or is there a softer side to things?
The Crookes: Sean Bean has got a softer side too you know. He was the voice of the lion in 2004 film ‘Pride’ which was the story of a lioness cub who rebels against her mother to mate with a lion from the other side of the river (Sean Bean’s character). It was BBC comedy-drama, which was met to average critical and commercial success. He fried a fish in our local chippy as well, so there is definitely a softer side to the Steel City.

Sameteens: You did a session for Steve Lamacq on Radio 1 – did you all huddle round the radio to listen to it like they do in those biopic films about The Beach Boys or whoever?
The Crookes: Yeah, it was just like that, we had no idea what it would sound like though so it was a complete surprise. Calvin Harris gave us the man nod in Maida Vale to make it all the more exciting… he was very tall.

Sameteens: What 5 words sum up a gig by The Crookes
The Crookes: An Earfuck With Sync Potential

This gig promises to be an amazing night for you and for all of the bands, a perfect way to end 2009 (not to mention with a BANG!) Check out Sameteens and all of the bands on Myspace and be sure to get yourselves down to The Club Academy, Manchester on the 26th November, remember its all ages and the tickets are only £7 (BARGAIN!)  Doors open at 7pm, see you there!

This is what is known here in Brooklyn as the ‘Shiznit’. I would also like to add that the Crookes are growing boys and my M&S Flapjacks are not only a gesture of goodwill but to help them become men!

Play The Promise by The Answering Machine or even the Girl’s Aloud version.
    Last Night by The Strokes

Pat, we wouldn’t have it any other way! I’d also like to second the request for The Answering Machine’s Girl’s Aloud cover….or any Girls Aloud, but none of Cheryl’s solo stuff
