So, BBC 1Xtra took to the stage on Saturday 28th November and it was something epic, to say the least. A 12,000 strong crowd came from far and wide came to Sheffield Arena to witness acts such as Dizzee Rascal, Sugababes, Tinchy Stryder, Donaeo, Chase & Status, Kano, JLS and more. I got there at around 6.30pm with bassline MC Tez Kidd and up coming producer Nitro, we went to the press office and got our press passes and went straight through, oh the feeling of being VIP for 5 hours. First on stage was Jay Sean who performed his US number 1 smahs, Down (Lil Wayneless of course), he did his thing I suppose, but I was hoping he would’ve at least performed Lush with Skepta, but it wasn’t to be. Tinchy Stryder got welcomed and he got on stage and did his electro/pop/grime set, he actually did the really well actually, his live shows has improved over recent years. The best part of Tinchy’s show was when he brought out his crew Ruff Sqwad to do the track, Tryna Be Me, which had the whole backstage (which was full of grime MCs) bubbling. Chase & Status were the ones to really get the crowd jumping on a next level though, when Eastern Jam came on, even I had to get up and buss a quick gun finger skank!
Then Chipmunk rolled on, he went a bit grime-y on us with his underground classic Who Are You, along with all his pop hits which had all the little girls screaming, that was when I took a seat. But when Taio Cruz came on it really upset my spirit because he annoys me, his music, his presence and his face, but I will give it to him though, he performed a new track that had a little funky twist to it which I was liking very much. The only females on the line up, Sugababes (Keishaless of course), came on and performed the massive track Get Sexy and the rest. Amelle is overly peng (another term for sexy) and I think she knows it too; the girl had a man carrying her bags! Obviously JLS were shite (bar their latest track Everybody In Love which I do actually like) and I just wanted them to get off the stage ASAP, like really, why do they dance like that? Enough of me being horrible, the most anticipated act of the night was of course, Dizzee Rascal; he got thee biggest reception when he came on. I was slightly disappointed with the fact that he never did I Luv U or any of his grime tracks, nevertheless he didn’t let the crowd down with doing an amazingly energetic live show. Even Calvin Harris jumped on stage with him for Dance Wiv Me, which was cool I suppose. Overall the night was a huge success, well put together and there was good vibes all round. Oh I nearly forgot Kano, he performed alongside Skepta, but I missed most of it, sounded okay though. 1Xtra Live 2010?
Please don’t read this review as if it was in order of appearance, because I was still mashed up from the night before when I went to the re-opening of Niche, so I can’t really remember all of that. Sorry…
