Everyone likes a good house party. Beds in the rooms are made to be jumped on, the televised set is ready to watch and the wardrobes primed to be ransacked- it’s great, especially when it isn’t your own house. Throw into that mix amazing DJ sets by the likes of Autokratz, Kleptones and the Whip and you have the making of a magical party. Oh and us playing Will Smiths ‘Willenium’ at midnight to kick in the New Year whilst the other stage blasted out Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’!
The threads of this event started back in October when Tesco starting piping out the smell of mince pies and inexplicably Wizzard and Slade were being played on the radio… Christmas was only 3 months away and so, by default, so was New Years Eve. Forget present buying the thought on our minds was how were we going to have the best end to 2009 as possible?!
Luckily a plan formed and the guys at Ruby Lounge were keen to help… The thought was: HOUSE PARRRTAYYYY. Without the fear that your mothers priceless vase was going to be used in an impromptu game of rugby or the family cat was going to gain inadvertent alcohol poisoning. House party in a club. DJs and wardrobes, dancing and kitchen units. Even a backgarden! The amazing Sarah almost transformed into the role of fairy godmother as she waved her magic wand and transformed the Ruby Lounge into a home as Jade, Hannah and Forrest rummaged up a whole load of vintage clothes to stick in the ‘Parent’s Wardrobe’. The kitchen came complete with working fridge and a sink (and some commerative plates from the Queens jubilee!), a teenage boys room featured some flattering Michael Jackson poster-age, a TV playing classic films (Four Weddings and a Funeral vs. Edward Scissorhands… on VHS) and who knows what was under the bed? Well, actually we do! Loads of Boxfresh clothes just waiting to be taken. Because what isa house party without someone accidentally (on purpose) taking bundles of clothes home? The bathrooms had goodies waiting as well from Stella McCartney and a tucked away notice board was just waiting to be discovered with City v United tickets to be had! Theft without the guilt- the perfect NYE karma!
Our house party antics caught the eye of the Guardian Guide who had us as their featured night and we managed to lure down Gareth Brooks from XFM. Also spotted were all of Delphic partying, a Courteener or two, some of Egyptian Hip Hop, the lovely people from Clique… a who’s who of the great and the good of Manchester. Our DJs made the night especially amazing and played the best selection of music we’ve heard all 2009! Wafting through the dulcet tones of Blur could be heard from the Whips DJ set whilst we dropped a bit of Dead Prez in the garden… Smith Tropical’s dubstep version of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and Twisted Wheel’s Motown 7”s were all highlights… as were the sets from the Answering Machine and Autokratz…
The night started out well with people pouring in at 9pm (already slightly tipsy? Hmm, we guessed so…) and congregations in the ladies room suggest that shampoo had be spotted… Later to be squirted all over the sinks and floor! Same Teens started the music in the main room mixing up 60s soul with new indie-pop and a dash of Lil’Wayne for good measure. The next few hours passed in a whirl of bed jumping, wardrobe lifting and disco-ball clutching. Since we sold out the night the crowd was around 600 strong and midnight passed in a flash of high fives, kisses and beer slopping. The ‘teenage boys’ bedroom seemed to be occupied with what every 14-year-old boy would wish it to be whilst people remained conspicuously chaste in the ‘parents room’. The kitchen held up nicely and someone even ran out for pizza at one point…!
So, it could be said that music, teenagers and mayhem often go together. No surprises then, for guessing what took place in the cooler-than-ice Boxfresh teen room. By the nights climax, the wallpaper had been torn down, the bed was a joyous mess – the Edward Scissorhands VHS found its fate being ripped apart by what could only be someone with actual scissor hands. The Boxfresh clothing in the wardrobe was nicked and subsequently worn with pride throughout the night too. Was this the coolest houseparty in Britain this NYE? It’d be hard to argue any differently.

Still struggling to get my head round it.
I didn’t know a party like that could happen in a club.
It was one of those legendary nights no-one’ll ever forget. WOW WOW WOW WOW.
Bless those that came up with that idea. You could have actually moved in!
Free food and beer in the fridge? ha.
(p.s. I stole a pair of pink knickers from the washing line in the garden).
awesome
Best night ever at The Ruby Lounge by far. It was mental, messy, packed, noisy, raucous, sticky, jumpy-on-beddy mayhem.
Thanks to all of you that came and destroyed our beautiful club (and drunk our bar dry!)
Bring on the next one…..
Thanks to same teens for allowing me to come down to such a brilliant nights and getting some cheeky new years antics pictures! Absolutely brilliant, well done to all the DJ’s and the fantastic boxfresh and umbro for all the goodies! cant wait for the next one xx
Well done on pulling off a never-forgettable night! A combination of Edward scissorhands, one too many vodkas and a WICKED soundtrack to my new years, roll on the next house party xx

Phenomenal that this event was in the Guardian Guide- cannot believe twisted wheel were special guest DJs too!
What happened to all the hidden beer on the night though?! Im definatley up for attending the next one! xxx
Was some sweet night. Loved the place and people. Boxfresh stuff was totally rad. If only ruby lounge was like that all the time, then Manchester will be full of 24 hour party people (; peace!
superb night, best new years eve i’ve had since the millennium, all of the decorations really made it and it looked and felt like a proper house party from start to finish, especially with how it looked at the end!
Thanks for refreshing my memory with an ace set of photos! Things were a little bit hazy and crazy on the night for obvious reasons… What an absolute blinder of an event! x

Meh! I had to wait for my boyfriend to get ready for so long that I missed out on plundering the wardrobes – I saw a dress I really wanted and it was on a boy!!
We drove for miles to see the Kleptones. We weren’t disappointed but the bar was a bit packed!! Should have had someone just serving beers instead of the wusses drinking shots
well, wow.
holyfuck!
your night sounds nothing short of amazingly radical!
my new years was spent watching family guy and south park with two others, and my cohort anna was up to no good at some clubs i believe, but god damn we both wish we had this kind of house party to go to! wowza!

Loved every minute of it.
Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

The night went too quick in my opinion! wicked DJ sets, one question: When is the next one?! x
What an amazing night, normally hate going out for NYE!
Keep up the good work!
How many NYE parties can you attend and walk way with a 70s stainless steel serving platter at the end of a Kleptone dance marathon in public space with a licenced bar and bring in a new decade? Some may have been drawn to the footy tickets but this shindig had something for everyone. A real night to remember without the usual NYE let downs. Music A** Atmosphere A** Crowd A (Been an oldy some young faces) Credability A** (My pupils were well impessed that Miss goes to cool parties) Tunes A**- big hands up to Eric and Nick.
