Another misconception is that we’re all spoilt, rich and privileged kids. It couldn’t be any further from the truth. Most of the kids at Brits come from working class backgrounds and just want to do well in life, myself included. That’s the thing about the school, it’s free, and it gives us an opportunity that we otherwise wouldn’t have.
A typical day at the BRIT School starts at 8:45am. I have to haul myself out of bed at 6am while my mum still languishes in her pit. I’m often running late, getting up early doesn’t help me differentiate between toothpaste and hand wash. It’s a short sprint to the bus stop, so I hurriedly grab myself a bowl of cereal and run out the door. Eating cereal on the bus isn’t the norm, but it is pretty funny. I must look like a Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut advert (it’s ludicrously tasty!) to the tired bus goers. On the other side of the bus, my friend rolls her eyes at me, and then takes a bagel out of her bag and starts munching away.
15 minutes later, after we’ve managed to wedge ourselves in between the frowning business men on the tube, (that’s rush hour for you), we’re off. Before we know it we’re gearing ourselves up to dash from the underground to get the 8:16 train to Selhurst, Croydon. Which, astonishingly, we do.
I’d been at the school for at least a week; and somehow, I still managed to miss a whole hour of my first period. It was one of those excruciatingly embarrassing moments, when you walk confidently into a classroom; swing your bag on the floor, scrape your chair forwards, and then turn your head slowly to notice the whole class staring at you. You think “this doesn’t look like my Year 10 English class.” Sudden realization hits that you are, in fact, in a room full of strangers. I hastily get up, mutter ‘Sorry’ and head out of the door quick sharp with a face as red as a tomato. Oops. After wondering around the school aimlessly I admit defeat, and go to reception to get help. “I’m lost.”
Thank God everyone’s so friendly. I swear, I’d be nowhere without Student Services.
