Taalam Acey is a spoken word artist, Known for his hard hitting lyrics depicting issues of his up bringing amongst other things. Fast pace with his flow and that additional ingredient of sensuality for the females. Growing up within the circuit I have had the pleasure of watching him perform and I was blown away. He resides in America where Spoken Word is embraced like its a Now (God knows whatever number) CD in the UK.
Last week I was sent a link in which Taalam speaks about Hip Hop Vs Spoken word and he shares his views. I decided to post this because I believe that there are similarities between the two genres however, they still remain different.
In all honesty, I agree with him when he highlights the fact that he grew up within a time where Hip hop was the sound, in saying that he further explains that his spoken word is mixed with the influences of music he listened to as he grew up.
My spoken word is a mix of my generation and that is fused with Hip Hop, Grime, Dubstep, Neo Soul, Rock e.t.c. That aggressive sh*t mixed with that soul mixed with random stupidity at times. It is the generation that I grew up in and that is my source of writing, everyday living.
People tend to be quite ignorant to the Art form, spoke to people that I felt to clap in their heads because they in my opinion were chatting BS. like dude, “It really is more than just an accapella and oppression dude” its much more broader now.
My album illustrates that.

What are your thoughts?
Is spoken word boring or is it something that you can hear out there like Hip Hop or Grime?

Taalam is the truth.. Spoken Word is part of Hip-Hop culture and Jazz culture before and a culture on to itself.. Its a focus on lyricism and the many depths of lyricism and the performance of lyricism. Talaam stands up there strong next to the best of todays Hip-Hop MCs. Great talent must always be embraced. Its often easier for the truly gifted to recognize talent in others.
I agree, others seems to dis agree with him though to my surprise. I thought what he said was on point, the way he described it from back in the day till now. Yet there are disagreements.
Crazy.
