Small Talk With Alex Nut

TOTR caught up with Alex Nut, top DJ, head of Eglo records and the main man on Rinse FM for a bit of ’small talk’.

Vinyl or MP3’s?

Vinyl all day, but I do use Serato and CD’s too. It all depends on the sound system and mixer etc. But in an ideal world, vinyl, the track has to be mixed and mastered properly too. Tapes sound nice too!

PS3 or Xbox 360?

More like Monopoly or Operation or Guess who, the last computer console I got was a Mega Drive 2…

Vans or Nike?

Nike, good to see they’ve stopped trying to rampantly destroy the planet now, they’ve gone all ethical, bout time. But I love a good pair of Half Cabs too… I’m on my hiking boots at the moment.

Pizza Express or Pizza Hut?

Naaaaaa, neither. I try to eat good, Fast food is f*ckry!

Nicki Minaj or Lil’ Kim?

Right now Nicki Minaj, she’d get it too! I think she’s alright, does Wayne write her lyrics or something?

Grime Daily or SBTV?

SBTV purely for the F64 series, that stuff is brilliant… Frisco’s is currently my favorite. He’s serious, real talk.

Brick Lane or Portobello Rd?

Brick Lane, I’ma East Sider, reminds me of my birth place Wolverhampton. Wests a bit snooty innit.

TV or Radio?

Radio, all day everyday. Rinse Fm, Smooth Radio, thems my stations.

Major Labels or Independent Labels?

Eglo, Tempa, Deep Medhi, Sound Signiture, Tans Mat = Independent.

You can catch Alex Nut this Friday 12th Feb 2010, at our next event. You can also catch him every Saturday afternoon from 1pm – 3pm on Rinse FM.

Introducing… Scratcha/DVA

Continuing the series of interviews “Introducing” people you probably have heard of already. I caught up with everyones favourite breakfast show host, Scratcha/DVA. His Grimey Breakfast show(weekdays, 8-11 am on Rinse.fm) mixes tunes from different genres, plenty of jokes, and some of the most outlandish competitions/banter ever conceived for radio. With a single 12 inch out now on hyperdub, alongside the Jelly Roll EP (with fellow Boxfresh contributor Roska), a whole heap of bookings ahead, and a CD to look forward to, I thought it was time to squeeze a few quick answers out of the hardworking Producer and DJ.

scratcha 2

For those who dont already know, Who is Scratcha/DVA?
I am Leon Smart, an unhealthy guy who hasnt excercised properly for a few years but when I put my cape on I turn into Scratcha DVA, the DJ/Record producer of my label DVA Music and I also present a breakfast radio show on www.rinse.fm.

Why the name Scratcha DVA?
Well, I am professionally known as Scratcha and my label is DVA…… It’s something to do with those two things but I can’t quite put my finger on it lol. But yeh DVA is an abbreviation of my original name Diverse Artz. Which was something me an my friend took ages to come up with. Now I’ve just broken it down to its catalogue number.

You currently have an ep out on the legendary Hyperdub label, how did you hook up with them?
Its just a single 12″ myself an Kode put together but the other day he did briefly talk about the possibilty of a DVA ep on Hyperdub in the near future. So that makes me happy. *smiles*

Am I right to assume your still working on a CD(No right turn)? Hows that coming along?

Yeh just finishing up a video for one of the tracks called ‘Wake Up’ which heavily features Black The Ripper. Im really happy with how its turnt out and can’t wait to show it off. Im a little bit sceptical on how to promote this project though. Its different. I always have been.

How do you go through the creative process?

I work in a few different ways but when working with artists, for me most I try and find out what makes someone tick. I mean really tick. I’ve noticed the best song comes out of them when I find out what that is. When beatmaking, I could just be anywhere in the street and think of a beat. So I’ll beat box it into my phone an then try create what was in my head that day in the studio. Infact ive been thinking of putting some of these clips on “No Right Turn”, so if you hear some waste beatboxing and whistling you will know why. I will use anything to make a beat but Logic i have used since 2001.

What are your main influences?

Musically anything innovative. Foreign Exchange with Nicolay is doing it for me right now. Non music influences, Alcohol, food  and quality zumpi time.

Who are you feeling in the UK right now?

There’s so many producers, DJs, MCs and Singers im feeling I don’t even know where to start. My breakfast show on Rinse will show you that. I’ve gotta say though, I’ve got extra special likings to Lady Lykez, Ms Darks, Esskay and City Boy Aks (formerly Axe Man). Those 4 MCs excite me.

Who would you like to work with/reach out to?

Foreign Exchange.

What else have you got in the pipeline?

Working on a couple projects now “No Right Turn” is out the way but I’ve been working on a project which features a musical remix of Natty and some singers on a next vibe. Something like Voice of Grime but a million times better. Its sounding sexy. It actually gives me a boner. (I’m fully cracking up).

You’ve been doing a lot of bookings, which events can we catch you at in the near future?

February is a good one. 10th in Leeds @ Wire Club, 12th @ Dirty Canvas, London. 13th live p.a of Im Leaving @ Harmony in Birmingham and 19th im @ We Are Dubists in Brixton Jamm. March 12th I will be playing Bloc Weekend @ Minehead Butlins b2b with Roska and then same night @ Plan B in Brixton, then onto Russian Bar for a night called Logik. But yeah can I have some more bookings please? email: bigtalkagency@googlemail.com

Any shouts?

Yeh shouts to Roska, Kode 9, Cooly G, Rinse FM and Square Pie in SpitalField Market.

Bullet Train X Spam Fritter X Hotoneten Party!

flyer-front1flyer2-back copy2

It’s been nearly a year since Hotoneten first sprung to life…

Over the past year we’ve consistently tried to keep things fresh and try out new ideas. When our music presenter and fellow Boxfresh columnist Marco Del Horno approached us about teaming up with his label Bullet Train and putting together a night, it was a simple no brainer – we had to do it.

Bullet Train have been smashing parties for a minute now and thought it was about time to step things up a gear. They’ve pulled out all the stops on this lineup and we’ve topped it up with an extra bunch of top names!

Everything from Dubstep to DnB to Funky will be represented and we’ve even thrown in Elijah & Skilliam to add a touch of grime to the mix with a full 90 minute set. All this on a full Funktion 1 soundsystem…

Mark this date in your diaries:

Saturday 27th February, Corsica Studios, London

Room One – Hosted by Bullet Train & Spam Fritter

Bar 9 (Z Audio)
Borgore (Mad Decent)
Sbtrkt (XL/Planet Mu)
DC Breaks (Ram Records)
Roska (Rinse FM)
Marco Del Horno (Rinse FM/Southern Fried)
The Brockout (Bullet Train)
DJ Bump ‘n’ Grind (Spam Fritter)

Room Two – Hosted by Hotoneten

Elijah & Skilliam (Rinse FM)
Noisses (ATG)
DJ Cable (Hotoneten)
Ordio Kid B2B Drama (Urban Nerds)

(Both rooms have Funktion 1 Soundsystem)

333 OLD ST LONDON

Hi there, another gig for you here, we are playing Mother Bar in Hoxton again. This is the upstairs room of 333 Old St. See flyers for details. Its £6 on the door, we are one of four fantastic bands playing and then the DJ kicks that off a night of dancing until the early hours.

We’ve been away from gigs for a couple of weeks due to producer negotiations, photo shoots, and the planning of our first album! Yes you heard it right! Still a long way away from it  all coming together but its looking good for summer 2010!

333 is always a proper laugh and one of our favorite venues. One of the few places that you can perform at the same level as the crowd and both band and fans can mingle as one knee swinging mass of bodies! Particularly easy when the people found frequenting the Mother Bar of 333 are always proper music fans and out for right reasons with no pretentiousess or peacock ulterior motives! Drinks are pretty average prices and the sound quality is great considering the large windows that dominate the room and the wooden flooring.

Anyways hope some of you can make it down. We’ll be on at 9.30pm ‘ish’ but bands start at 8pm – 11pm.

Cheers peeps, see you there.

COVER YOURSELF IN GRIME

grime kid

Covers throughout musical history have been a way of getting new artists on the map. Boy bands, dance mixes, urban crossovers, everyone has taken a popular sample and claimed to have made it better.

Recently, Grime has jumped on the Cover bandwagon, and the two have subsequently joined forces to prove the theory that everyone loves a song they already know the lyrics to. 2009 was a good year for covers in the Grime world, so Kieran Yates picks some of the 5 best…lets hope the new decade can measure up.

1. Say what’s Real- Little Dee- Originally by Drake

Last year was the year that Drake blew up and anyone who’s anyone has played ‘Best I ever had’ to their other halves and enjoyed the booty bouncing cheerleaders in said video. Props then, to anyone who takes Drake on, and  in this case I salute Little Dee for covering ‘Say what’s Real’. Gritty and heartfelt, the track acts as a bit of an homage to the rapper NE, and for me, puts Dee on the map this year. Not many can take on Drake and come out standing but this one goes to Little Dee. WIN.

2. Stay- Boy Better Know feat. Chipmunk- Originally by Jay Sean

Ok, I love Jay Sean as much as the next Asian girl: catchy hooks, soppy ballads, he’s one RnB hook away from Bollywood’s finest, but ‘Stay’ was a bit emotional even for me. Thank God then, for a BBK injection, as they show him exactly how best to get over a lady. Cue misogyny from a fresh faced Chippy : ‘These girls need are forgetting their roles’ and a cold hard dose of reality from Skepta:  ‘You keep on ringing her Nokia, worst thing about is she’s on Voda’. Ha.

3. Empire State of Mind- Kasha- Originally by Jay-Z

Jay Z  made arguably one of the best tunes of last year which made everyone want to be a New Yorker, so it goes without saying that this a hard track to follow. But you can’t deny Kasha’s bars on this one; name dropping the likes of Richard Blackwood, Lewisham Mc Donald’s and the rest,  I think its the Laaandaaan accent that does it for me. Yesss.

4. Hustler- Blacks feat Little Dee and Jendor- Originally by Kano

Hustler to me is one of the best Grime tracks ever made, mainly because it shows why exactly it is that everyone says that Kano was way ahead of his time, but also that it harks back to a time of Grime that the old schoolers would call the ‘glory days’. Blacks brings us back then to the present with his version of the classic, from the mixtape, ‘Sick Individual’, and its is frickin sickkkk.

6. Juicy- Tinchy Stryder, Sway, Bashy Tor, Kyla, Sincere- Originally by Notorious B.I.G

Ok, so I know this wasn’t from the past year, but I couldn’t write this without mentioning the best cover from the last couple of years courtesy of 1 Extra. When I first heard this, I was so excited I did a little wee in my pants. Again, it makes you feel less bad that we didn’t have Biggy cos what we got on the scene right now is pretty sick. So, I know its old now, but whatever, I love it. My favourite verse goes to Sway, even though you know they all killed it. God, this makes me happy.

In the abscence of more covers,  keep yourself entertained with this lot:
O.G’z concert. 4th March, @ The Den, tickets available from siananderson.blogspot.com,Acts on the night include Boy Better Know, Wiley, Rinse, J2K, Manga, Devlin. Also a fundraiser for the family of N.E aka Leon

RAVE 4 HAITI

Usually, Murkage Cartel doesn’t give a shit about anything apart from having a good time. After the Haiti earthquake, however, we knew it was worth using our hype powers to raise money for people who need it much more than we do.

At Rave 4 Haiti, we raised over £640 for the Oxfam Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

Lucien Fever, Dialog, Murkage Dave and Mr Kenzo played sick sets. A raver ran into the dj booth  to reload a tune in the middle of Mr Kenzo’s set. Murkage Dave kept the crowd hyped.  More importantly, we raised some serious cash.

BIG THANKS to everyone who attended.

Check out the pictures…
