Kemi from The Kemistry Q&A

Taking time out from our busy schedule we met up with Kemi Akinbola. Lead lady of The Kemistry, music promoter and all round music connoisseur. Check out what she had to say.

TOTR: Hey, introduce yourself?

Kemi: Well my name is Kemi; I am Nigerian rooted, hackney born and raised, lover of music, and hater of haters. I founded a London based live music event (Mindie) and I am now the lead singer, songwriter for The Kemistry. ‘If you don’t know now you know…n*****’

TOTR: Describe your band The Kemistry’s sound?

Kemi: I find it pretty hard; I hate answering this question because I have a fear of sounding like one those pretentious types that try to cram a load of different genres into one verbal sentence, when they describe their sound. But I guess I might as well join them; some tracks are jazzy, others are chilled out, some have dub influences, others have a hip hop stance, a bit of an electronic vibe and all sorts really. I guess it is best to just call it ‘The Kemistry sound’.

TOTR: Who inspires you musically?

Kemi: I have a pretty huge selection of musicians that I listen to, which varies depending on my mood. I will say that bands like Metric and Interpol, and singers like Lauren Hill, Faith Evans, and Mary J will always inspire me. I love K-os, he is an amazing talent, I think his individuality and talent really shines through in what he does. Also the oldies, Motown records can be replayed all day in my house. The Supreme’s scream out great pop melodies for me, all day every day. I also love Sej Tankian, he’s ace. Random I know.

TOTR: Cool, what do you prefer, being on stage or being in the studio?

Kemi: I think being on stage, nothing beats a performance, feeding off the crowd, and watching their reactions to the music you have created. I just like to zone out and go with the flow. Recording in a studio can be bloody restrictive, but it’s got to be done. But most definitely being on stage, knowing that I’ve written the tracks and can express their meanings to people it pretty priceless.

TOTR: Not only are you a lead singer of a band, but a promoter too and run a night called Mindie. How did you get into promoting and why is your night called Mindie?

Kemi: I got into it a long time ago, ‘the scene’ was a lot different then too. In-fact, I was abroad travelling for a bit and thought it would be a good idea to try and put on shows with unsigned live bands. So when I got back to the UK, I booked the Purple Turtle in Camden and got some acts together to show off their good stuff. When I realised that people actually wanted to come, I decided to keep it going.

Why it is called Mindie, I do not know, it literally just popped into my head whilst I was sitting on my chair as a usher in Toronto for the Musical wicked. No lie.

TOTR: Are you looking forward to Mindie meets TOTR?

Kemi: Yes I am! I’m looking forward to the vibes that both nights will bring when they conjoin. I just know that everyone will be there purely for the music, and I think it is really important that we continue to support new and unsigned music, cause to be frank a lot of sh!t is getting through the net and poisoning our youth musically. I mean who the heck is Jason Derulo? Shocking.

TOTR: Last, but by no means least, which bands or artists are you feeling at the moment?

Kemi: Like I say Metric, they never fail to produce a good record and Emily Haines has an amazing voice and an amazing play on words. I’m feeling Janelle Monae, I think her take on pop music is fresh, but relevant to the times. I must admit I’m finding it increasingly difficult today to pin point an artist that I am willing to follow to the death. A lot of music being mass produced has a much shorter shelf life these days, so you can pretty much tell straight off the bat that it is soulless. But unsigned artists like Ghospoet (who is now signed to Brownswood Recordings), Abiade, Shuanise, Girl in a Thunderbolt, Fatima, Fleur De Lys, Maverick Sabre (now signed to mercury) and Mikill Pane are doing good things for new music right now. In my opinion.

I’m also really feeling Nneka, she is dope, makes me proud to see good artists coming from my motherland.

I could actually reel off a longer list of artists that I am not feeling but that would be deep innit. Ha,ha.

You can catch The Kemistry alongside many others when Mindie Meets Turn Off The Radio this Thursday 30th September. You can also follow The Kemistry on Twitter or check out The Mindie Blog.

One for the ex- pats. (Freshlyground goes political)

I’m not a huuuge fan of Freshly Ground’s afro-pop (most of you will remember their FIFA collabo with Shakira) , but I gotta say this video is pretty cool.

In it they diss the hero/liberator- turned dictator, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, calling him “chicken.” It also got them banned from entering Zim!

They also feature the puppets from the puppet satire show ZA News based on the comics by legendary satirist Zapiro AKA Jonathan Shapiro. I gotta say, it’s a step up from collaborating with Shakira.

Just don’t think y’all can still go dissing Africa ya hear?

Happy Heritage day peeps!!!

Basically… It’s all about Grime.

It’s been a while since I did one of these long blogs just rambling and talking about all the things you need to go and check out this month and next month, but the amount of stuff on the horizon, means I need to get this out of the way now, before there’s just way too much to write about.

First of all GrimeDigital(grimeforum/grimepedia/etc) is gonna be expanding, in a whole number of ways, but you can check out the first two power moves here, we now have Grimevids.com and GrimeTshirts.com.

They both pretty much speak for themselves. After the phenomenal amount of hits our youtube channel started receiving after we uploaded that remix we decided it was time, to build a new site where users, could actually log on to find nothing but the best Grime video’s, from unknowns to the established, doesnt really matter, as long as it is Grime.

Grime T shirts

As for the T-Shirts, well, you may have seen our GrimeDigital MD aka Tom ‘Hij’ Higham rocking the infamous Grime jumper’s at pretty much every rave/event worth attending, and the sheer envy/jealousy directed towards him was enough to make them available to the general public. (this may or may not be partly true lol)

There have been quite a few huge releases this month as well, I’ll concentrate on the instrumental side of things, because those damn MC’s usually get most of the attention.

Just Grime:001 was released on the 17th of this month, and is a compilation featuring 12 instrumental tracks from 4 of the best underated Grime producers out there. I’ve been banging out some of these tunes from Moony, Bouncer, Jack Daniels, and Exo Remedy, for more than a year now and its great to see them finally get a release.

Mr.Mitch – Fright Night EP from Gobstopper Records on Vimeo.

Also Mr Mitch has just dropped “The Fright night EP“, the original being another favourite of mine, and has included 4 excellent remixes in the EP package. The Deset remix is a madness, trust me. Also while you’re getting that make sure you go and purchase the next release from the Butterz camp, The Quality street EP which also features Mr.Mitch alongside, Royal T, Terror Danjah, and SRC.

Mr Mitch – Skittles.

As we move further into the final quarter of the year we’ll be preparing for the Grime Awards 2010, and this year promises to be bigger and better than the previous years, (shout out to everyone who came down to the last rave to celebrate the occasion). I’ll be releasing more details on that in the coming weeks, but for now we’ve just finished a Producer competition, and after 49 great entries, plus a whole lot of debate, we’ve finally found our 4 winners, and will be releasing material from them very soon. For more info on that check out the winners article here.

Again congrats to AKL, Deset, DJ Myrikal and B-Lam.

Make sure you also look out for “Grime at its Purest.” Which will be available at the end of October, and will feature some of the hardest exclusive freestyles from the scene’s rising stars, alongside some of the great established microphone controllers.

There’s quite a few more bits I need to write about, but I’m looking at the word count and it’s telling me thats enough for now.

So go check out every link in there, follow me on that twitter thing @justgeo, follow @grimeforum, and if for any reason you need to shout me, the email addresses are on the blog. Safe

Backstage at the VMA’s! Wotttt?!!!!!!!!

Our LA correspondent, Lacey Gray,  gives us the low down …

Lacey Gray backstage at the VMAs

VMA weekend, wow!! It started back at rehearsals on sat 11th at the Nokia Theatre, Downtown LA. Myself and VMA weekend partner-in-crime and founder of UTV – (pretty much the Romanian answer to MTV) www.utv.ro headed for the dressing rooms to see what was going down as the stage was being dressed with props and sound checks were in full flow. We happened to stumble out onto the main stage during Kanye’s rehearsal which was pretty sweet as we got to strut our stuff across the impressive white platform against the huge LED screens (it was stunning from up there) and down the stairs towards the audience seating. He didn’t seem to mind and for a moment I made like GAGA only less meat and more mouth.

Boxfresh backstage at the VMAs

Sunday provided us with a stretched limo and 2 glorious AAA passes once again so we mixed up a spot of concert watching with green room, on-stage and backstage antics including rubbing shoulders with the trouser snake- Timberlake who was  bigging-up Drake outside the toilets (see video), Florence and the Machine who was flipping out after her performance which was cute to see as it’s clearly still an adrenaline buzz rather than a bi-product of the auto pilot setting. Deadmau5 was being Deadmau5 (who for the second time declined my offer to model his mouse head but, sweetheart, if you ask me it’s kinda old hat by now anyways so you can keep it. No pun intended). Rosario Dawson was looking delightful and beaming at everyone she came into contact with which can only mean two things, she’s either a harmoniously wealthy lady or up the duff. Jaden Smith was floating about accompanied by minders swaggering like a pocket version of his Dad and Justin Bieber hung back for a minute with the biggest entourage and a stance that can only have been adopted from his home boy, Usher who kept himself pretty much locked away. Locked up seemed to work for  Robyn too but no rest for the wicked for Lady GaGa and 30 Seconds to Mars who made themselves available for press after the show with Perez and a ton of overzealous security. We joined them down at the Marriot Hotel function room where the PRs and paps eagerly awaited the opportunity to probe and shoot. I got some probing and shooting of my own done too just so you could get to share in the experience too so check it! Did you manage to catch the televised show? Well, if not you missed a Mary J Bilge/ Drake 2-way and some regurgitated Kanye/ Taylor loveliest drama with the references made in their intros but  really? get over it! I thought Robyn’s performance was understated yet solid as was the live vocal of Paramore’s Hayley Williams (Airplanes/ B.O.B). That broad can really belt it out, on a level. As for Chelsea Handler- enough of the ‘black-man’ jokes- really boring and just plain excessive; find some new material, lady. Finally- Lady GaGa, props on scooping up and clearing out the awards cabinet whilst maintaining the devotion to keep the fans happy. Amid the madness she took a second out to grace me with kind words of wisdom as we snuggled up for a mugshot together-’ be careful, the meat is real you know’. See, home girl had my back and as for the Rib-eye, It brings a whole new level to rump in the trunk.

Anywy, enough talk. Check the pics out below!

Until next time …

PREVIEW: Def Jam Rapstar

Last week myself and Fresh Cuts engineer (and resident rapper) CD Spinz finally got a chance to play Def Jam Rapstar, the eagerly anticipated Hip-Hop console release from 4mm Games.

Before we get into that though, for the uninitiated, a brief history: the Def Jam brand is fairly colossal - it began life back in 1984 as a record label, releasing debut singles from then-unknowns LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys. Fast-forward two and a half decades and Def Jam Recordings has become a legendary cornerstone in Hip-Hop’s history, whilst the Def Jam brand has expanded, providing us with poetry, comedy and a couple of genuinely awesome rap-themed beat-em-ups. And Def Jam Icon… the less said about that the better.

Now a bit of a confession – prior to jumping on the mic during our sneak peak at Rapstar last week, I’d never played a karaoke game. I’d never even played Guitar Hero or Rock Band. In fact, my only experience with any music game was ten minutes on DJ Hero in HMV (sidenote – unsurprisingly I was awesome). It wasn’t that I was too shy to play these games, it was more that they just held no appeal to me. Singstar ABBA? Nah, you can miss me with that. Guitar Hero Metallica? I don’t have the hair for it.

So it was with a combination of curiosity and apprehension that I first greeted initial talk of a new Hip-Hop karaoke game coming from the Def Jam stable. It could be great, but it could just as easily be awful – a shambolic and cheesy misappropriation of Hip-Hop culture. As time went on and more information about it came out, some of those initial fears were dispelled and I became more excited about getting my hands on Def Jam Rapstar. And having spent some time with the game, I can honestly say that excitement was warranted.

This game is fun. It’s ground-breaking, refreshing, interesting, and could potentially birth Hip-Hop’s next superstar, but more importantly, it’s genuinely enjoyable. The game’s unique selling point is that gamers can upload 30second long video clips of themselves performing to the internet and potentially go viral. The game supposedly comes to life with this community feature, allowing aspiring rappers around the world to compete, and harnessing social networks to raise their profile and popularity. It’s a genius idea, and one I look forward to seeing in action, but I don’t think it’s what will sell the game.

Rapstar is going to move units because its core gameplay (the karaoke) is slick, well executed and perfect party material. The breadth of songs available is remarkable, and the makers have done well finding a balance between obvious crowd-pleasers (for example Kanye West’s Gold Digger) and Hip-Hop classics (Onyx’s Slam for one). There’s a distinct lack of Jay-Z and Eminem, but I’m hoping that will be rectified by the game’s release in November, and the inclusion of UK artists was a smart move. My first pick, without much consideration, was Tinie Tempah’s smash Pass Out and as the UK scene grows in strength, more and more fans will want to play these kind of homegrown hits.

I could go on, but I’ve rambled on quite enough for now. If you’ve made it this far, congratulations, here’s news of a little treat we’ve got coming for you guys. This week myself, my Fresh Cuts co-host Chinners, and our aforementioned engineer-slash-rapper CD Spinz will be heading back to Def Jam Rapstar headquarters to battle it out for supremacy and bragging rights. Check out the forthcoming video footage of that major event very soon, to see a lot more of the game, and see us all make fools of ourselves on camera!

Oh, there’s fresher videos than this one here, but I love it so…

And because I’m nice, here’s an actual look at the game, and a few words from the legendary Uncle Rush (that’s Russell Simmons to you).

Sarah Young + Red Bull = ‘Music Class of 2010′

On August 20, 24 and 25, Sarah Young and Red Bull UK will be teaming up with a string of innovative artists from the music industry to help launch the Music Class of 2010 project.

Music Class of 2010 is a multi-media editorial concept, which includes those musicians and producers who don’t simply top the charts, but create music with artistic integrity.

Twenty-one year old DJ and Stylist Sarah Young and internationally renowned photographer Satoshi Minakawa are the creative team behind the project, the cast list of which is scheduled to include the following: -

Mistajam (BBC Radio One DJ)
Roses Gabor (Artist)
Toddla T (UK producer)
Redlight (UK producer)
Swindle (UK producer)
Jammer (MC)
J2k (MC)
Donaeo (Artist)
Mz Bratt (Female MC)

The editorial will be launched at the Red Bull HQ in London, where in November the artists involved will create an exclusive track in just two hours within the VIP music studios adjacent to the event, which will be streamed live online and into the media event next door via TV screens.

Creative director of the project Sarah Young explains her vision: “As a DJ and Fashion stylist, I deal with music and fashion on a daily basis. The two are inextricably linked – right now the UK music scene is the best it’s ever been and receiving international recognition.

“These artists, dj’s and producers are the people at the forefront of street trends, they are the people who wear what they want, when they want and others follow. As a stylist I am going to take each artists style and multiply that by 10, whilst giving each look a high fashion edge.

“Music is a form of expression, and so is fashion and this project signifies the cultural importance of this fusion.”

Sarah is going to be working with a selection of labels including D&G, Lavin, Vivienne Westwood Man, Armani, Balenciaga, Burberry, Margiela, Marc Jacobs, Matthew Williamson, Nike, and Harrods, as well a selection of ‘New Gen’ designers.
