TOTR predicts – week 3

World Cup 2010 is now in the knock out stages and my prediction is somewhat still on course. Holland are now in the quarter finals, but face the mighty Brazil and Robin Van persie has only scored one WC goal. Looking very unlikely to be the competitions top goal scorer.

On another note Ghana one of the competitions under-dogs are also in the quarter finals after beating the USA in extra time and now face on form Uruguay.

Good luck Ghana!

BTW, England were knocked out, the less said about that the better.

The tournament is now in it’s final stages the men shall firmly be separated from the boys, as the more superior teams come to the forefront. However, saying that the tournament has been very unpredictable thus far.

So, good luck to Holland for their match against Brazil tomorrow and once again good luck to Ghana.

My pics from last week’s Portugal vs Korea DPR game.

This was the game where Portugal won a crazy 7 goals (!) against Korea DPR.
It was kind of a downer, cos I was rooting for Korea.
The 60 000 other people in the stadium were all over the moon though and it was dope being there.
There is a huge Portuguese community in Cape Town, most tracing their heritage back to Madeira, which Christiano Ronaldo’s hood. Naturally, they came out in full force.

I took these pics using a Diana F+ camera by Lomography. I loaded colour slide film and cross-processed it at the lab, which gives it the moody colours. (No photoshoppin, peeps!)

TOTR predicts – week 2

The World Cup is 10 days strong and counting, and my prediction of Holland winning the WC is still on track as they beat Japan 1-0. Robin Van Persie is still yet to score but I’m not worried because I know he has has goals in him.

As another week passes, that means more talking points and yes England are involved once again.

Kaka’s sending off (which should never have been), another dull England performance and Rooney’s outburst are just some of the weeks talking points.

Kaka was sent off after being shown a second yellow card when Ivory Coast midfielder Kader Keita went down holding his face following a harmless collision. England drew 0-0 with Algeria, a disappointing result which then saw them booed off the pitch and Wayne Rooney vented his frustration.

“nice to see home fans boo ya, that’s what loyal support is”

How about play well and win Mr Rooney, then talk!

TOTR, reckons if England were to reach the quarter finals then that would be a good tournament for them. Semi finals and they would have over-achieved. Their next game is against Slovenia on Wednesday, lets see what they can do but don’t expect too much.

BLOW MY VUVUZELA

fans n vuvuz
The World Cup is well on the way, and football fever still has South Africa strongly in its grip. SA team Bafana Bafana scored the first goal of the Cup last Friday, gloriously I might add but unfortunately that was the last goal they have scored thus far. In fact we conceded three on Wednesday to Uruguay (at least we have scored one, unlike the Frenchies). The other African teams have also not had much luck; Ghana being the only one to win a game so far. It’s a big downer for us as you can imagine. The biggest African star in the first African World Cup so far, as such, has not been a player but rather what the crowds have been playing – the vuvuzela – a legendary plastic horn. The origin of the horn is contested, some saying it developed from the kudu horn, used in (unnamed) cultural traditional ceremonies, other fans claim they were the first to make them out of aluminium, and yet others claim it started (like most plastic trinkets) in China.

14860618

This plastic horn instrument has become both the festive trademark of Africa’s first World Cup, but also the black sheep, and the bane of many an international ear. These droning babies, with their distinctive Bflat tone are so loud that they could cause permanent damage if exposed to for an extended period of time (like a 90-minute football game). I’m thinking of starting an earplug business and retiring early.
vuvu earplug

Players like Portugal’s Ronaldo have been complaining that they can’t communicate on the pitch, and there have been numerous calls to ban the little blasters. On Tuesday, the BBC even announced that they are planning vuvuzela-free broadcasts, somehow giving a “clean feed of the game” by muting the B-Flat frequency. Despite the outcry, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has officially endorsed it and FIFA’s big dada, Sep Blatter, tweeted (yes, he’s on Twitter) that the vuvuzela is here to stay as it’s part of Africa’s football culture. One thing I agree with him on. This is how football games sound here. We are hosting. You’re in our house now, Like Montell Jordan said, “This is How We Do It. “

300
As far as I can tell, a little place I call the World is just as much into it as well. A Dutch software company just developed a vuvuzela i-phone application, our stadiums are sounding like giant beehives and people are selling the instrument on streets around the world. China is apparently the biggest manufacturer of the “instrument”. It’s here to stay. Once the World Cup is done you won’t have to hear them anymore so enjoy the din while you can. If you can’t get your hands on one where you are, here’s a web- based vuvuzela you can try out…
VIVA VUVUZELA!

TOTR predicts – update

World Cup 2010 is only 3 days old and already there has been tonnes of talking points. Typically involving England with their goalkeeping blunders, injuries and bad results. Germany rising to the occasion with a 4 nil opening victory and of course Maradona’s suit.

Anyway, the reason for this post is to update you all on how my prediction is going. Last week I predicted that the Netherlands will be the overall winners of the 2010 World Cup and that Robin Van Persie will also be top goalscorer. So far, my prediction has got off to an okay start. The Netherlands won 2 nil today, minus Van Persie not scoring. However, I am extra happy because I won some money.

I had a little flutter on the Netherlands to win 2nil today and they did. I didn’t win much but it’s something I guess and it just goes to show that I know what I am talking about.

So, to keep up to date with the Netherlands pursuit of the World Cup 2010 check back here for weekly updates. To keep up to date the with TOTR in general please join our facebook fan page.

P.S Don’t forget to bet sensibly.

Feel it, it is here… (not a new pickup line.)

Feel it, it is here… (Not my new pickup line)
In my first blogpost for Boxfresh it is impossible not to talk about the World Cup. Today is the official kickoff, and the vibe on the streets is pretty much pandemonium, or as my friend Kelli put it on her Facebook profile, Cape Town is pretty much a jizz-in-your- pants-party right now. The constant monotone drone of vuvuzelas are in the air (from breakfast to bed), flags are flapping triumphantly on every single car, and shiny happy people are going to work with their faces painted in crazy rainbow colours (AKA the South African flag).
After months of dissing FIFA (making our govt spend billions on stadiums in areas that didn’t need the development; removing unsightly homeless people from the city and dumping them far away, general ugly capitalist behavior), I gotta say, I’m excited. And I’m going to start looking for tickets. Does that make me a sellout or stupid cos maybe all the games are sold out? The first game is on at 4pm our time; South Africa vs Mexico and we’re pretty much gonna cream them.
The highlight of the World Cup so far was the kickoff concert last night, held in Johannesburg. The moment of the night was Alicia Keys’ seemingly last minute collabo with South African heroes, Afro-Psychedelic rockers, the BLKJKS (fresh from touring abroad and recently signed to US label Secretly Canadian). However local broadcasters decided to cut to ad-break as the Keys/BLKJKS vibe was happening…. WTF??? Luckily we caught the end of the track and they killed it with their liberation inspired masterpiece Umzabalazo afterwards.
That being said, the only thing I can equate the vibe to is kind of like being in a disaster movie… overcrowded public spaces, people huddled around TVs and radios, the overwhelming urge to call your mum and say “Did you see that?”. Who knows, maybe this is the end of the world…a spectacular one.
So, if you’re an Englishman/woman in South Africa right now, welcome and enjoy (and bring sterling). If you are a South African who emigrated because you thought you could do better elsewhere, hate to say we told you so…

I gotta go call my mum.

PS watch Somalian K’naan’s Wavin’ Flag video for the World Cup. It’ll get you in the mood. (For watching football.) Much better than Shakira’s “Waka Waka.”

TOTR predicts – The World Cup 2010

The World Cup is only days away now and as a massive football fan I can hardly contain my excitement. The worlds best players and international teams taking part in the ultimate football tournament for a month. New superstars will be born and legends will fade and I for one shall be glued to my TV screen.

I am not much of a gambler but I do like to have a flutter every now and again. I especially like to bet on big sporting events like Boxing or The Grand National and the World Cup will be no different. The smart money will be on Brazil or Spain to win this years World Cup but my money will be going on the Netherlands to win the tournament.

Underrated and with a point to prove you’d be a fool to bet against them. They’re also unbeaten in 19 games and fronted by the fit again Robin Van Persie I may even go as far to say he’ll end up the tournaments top goal scorer.

So, remember where you heard it first the Netherlands to win the World Cup 2010 and Robin van Persie to take the golden boot.

P.S If you do have a bet like myself, bet sensibly.

I shall leave you with this:
