Follow Up Friday #2

Recently I posted this trailer from the upcoming movie about the creation of Facebook, The Social Network.

This morning I saw what they are calling “the other Facebook movie”. The trailer made me spit out my instant coffee in excitement. Apparently the film was a hit at Sundance this year. Beware though, some reviewers are calling for viewers to not watch the trailer at all (SPOILER ALERT!) The less you know, the better. You dig?

At first the trailer makes it seem like the film is a documentary, but by the final review quote at the end (”The best Hitchcock Film that Hitchcock never directed!”), we are clear that its not.

It seems that the Blair Witch/ Cloverfield/ Paranormal Activity mock documentary approach has extended to the new genre I like to call the Tech/Net/Geek-Thriller.

Still working on my Twitter film, or Twilm. Coming Soon. PG.

Afrikaaps

Hey peeps, I been quiet, I know. I thought instead of pretending like I’m down with what’s happening and new, I thought I’d just let you know what happening and new in my life. A scary concept I know, but lets get down to it.

I’ve just finished a documentary film called Afrikaaps, dealing with the history of Afrikaans in Cape Town. Most people (including the many Afrikaner ex-pats in the UK) think that Afrikaans is a language that gradually just developed in South Africa as a mix of Dutch and the different European languages from the settlers in the Cape.

moenier wide

However research and history shows that Afrikaans actually started as a creole/slave/servant language, later hijacked by Europeans. The clincher is that the decendants of these people don’t know this, and the way they speak is now represented as a “funny” or “gangster” version of Afrikaans. I followed the theatre production (with my video camera) that presented and unpacked these issues, to create a timely piece of agit-prop theatre.

Here is the trailer for the film:

We had a successful run at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, and sold out both of our scheduled screenings in Cape Town.

Hopefully coming soon to theatres near y’all…everywhere….

OK Self promotion over lets get back to some real blogging… uh, how about that Kanye?

Sarah Young + Red Bull = ‘Music Class of 2010′

On August 20, 24 and 25, Sarah Young and Red Bull UK will be teaming up with a string of innovative artists from the music industry to help launch the Music Class of 2010 project.

Music Class of 2010 is a multi-media editorial concept, which includes those musicians and producers who don’t simply top the charts, but create music with artistic integrity.

Twenty-one year old DJ and Stylist Sarah Young and internationally renowned photographer Satoshi Minakawa are the creative team behind the project, the cast list of which is scheduled to include the following: -

Mistajam (BBC Radio One DJ)
Roses Gabor (Artist)
Toddla T (UK producer)
Redlight (UK producer)
Swindle (UK producer)
Jammer (MC)
J2k (MC)
Donaeo (Artist)
Mz Bratt (Female MC)

The editorial will be launched at the Red Bull HQ in London, where in November the artists involved will create an exclusive track in just two hours within the VIP music studios adjacent to the event, which will be streamed live online and into the media event next door via TV screens.

Creative director of the project Sarah Young explains her vision: “As a DJ and Fashion stylist, I deal with music and fashion on a daily basis. The two are inextricably linked – right now the UK music scene is the best it’s ever been and receiving international recognition.

“These artists, dj’s and producers are the people at the forefront of street trends, they are the people who wear what they want, when they want and others follow. As a stylist I am going to take each artists style and multiply that by 10, whilst giving each look a high fashion edge.

“Music is a form of expression, and so is fashion and this project signifies the cultural importance of this fusion.”

Sarah is going to be working with a selection of labels including D&G, Lavin, Vivienne Westwood Man, Armani, Balenciaga, Burberry, Margiela, Marc Jacobs, Matthew Williamson, Nike, and Harrods, as well a selection of ‘New Gen’ designers.

You know Facebook? Yeah, that was me.

While on a uber- productive Facebook- free day the other day, I came across this trailer for the film about  the creation of Facebook, The Social Network.

Directed by film auteur David Fincher, of Se7en and Fight Club, and based on the book The Accidental Billionaires, I gotta say this movie looks promising. Even if Justin Timberlake is in it. ( Just kiddin’ JT. Love you man.)

Maybe I should start a Trailer Oscars cos this trailer is brilliant, from the use of  a Radiohead cover to the building of suspense. (Shiver.)

The trailer made me realise how often we actually use Facebook on a daily basis. It’s become such a major part of our every day, and we kinda take for granted that it’s just there. Meanwhile, all this drama and deceit happened while putting it together…  and some guys got mad rich!

Maybe I should start writing a script for the Twitter movie. What you guys think?

I need to call my agent.

SARAH YOUNG | FASHION FILM | STYLING FOR THE MOVING IMAGE

As a stylist i prefer styling for the moving image, i feel it shows the garments off in much more realistic , more beautiful way.

I have never been the type of stylist to dress the models or artists at videos or shoots and then sit down and chill. I think any good stylist should be well versed in art direction and not only know their fashion but elements such as videography, photography, direction and ALL that techno ish! If you go on set knowing your stuff you command much more authority anyway.

So after seeing enough very talented male directors do their thing, and never being one to give into gender stereotypes, i thought i would switch up the roles and give being behind the camera a go.

Releasing my frustrated inner geek and learning how to use my extreme bossiness / anal-ness to my advantage, I directed and styled my first ever fashion film for a fashion week project.

A film concentrating on the idea of interracial relationships and combating societies prejudices and racisms.

Difference is beautiful. Enjoy!
