BOXFRESH MEETS DJ CABLE | INTERVIEW

For those who don’t know you, give us an introduction…

I’m DJ Cable – multi-award winning DJ, sneaker head and DIY enthusiast. I play a mixture of Hip Hop, Dubstep, Grime & Electronica, and have a tendency to be sarcastic.

What did you do at the weekend?

I had a rare weekend off from DJ-ing, so I went out in East London for the evening, got drunk, and ended up sleeping on Khalil’s sofa.

Tell us how you got into music, and doing what you do now…

I heard scratching on various Hip Hop mixtapes and records, thought it sounded cool and wanted to try it out. I blagged a budget set-up, and it progressed from there really! My taste in music has somewhat changed a little along the way, but I still keep to my Hip Hop roots with my sets, productions, mixtapes, etc.

You’re 3 times DMC Champ (and champ of a few other things too actually). We’re all ears…

Rather than go out and party like the rest of my friends when I was 16, I locked myself in my rooms and focused on how to scratch records back and forth. I started entering battles in 2003; lost a few, won a few, and eventually managed to become 3x DMC UK Team Champ (as part of Bionic Stylus), as well as win a few mix competitions (Dogs On Acid Comp, Alizé Remixed Comp, etc).

I’ve retired from solo battles now to concentrate on doing shows, working with artists, producing music and running a digital label (Triangulum), but I’ll still keep doing the Team battles – they’re a lot of fun.

Send us one of your favourite YouTube clips…

If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be?

Joker. His sound is incredible… I’m still trying to figure out how me makes some of those synth sounds. The dude’s too good!

What can readers expect to see from DJ Cable on the Boxfresh blog?

Anything from sneaker posts, to DIY tips, random scratch videos from myself or of other DJs that I rate, new music, mixes, and a lot more…Maybe more videos of talking pets. There’s even a husky that can say “I love you”. Awesome stuff.

We wanna know your Top 3…

Halloween LA styles

Quick catch-ups from state side before I jump on a plane to Blighty (YAY!)

The month of October was gearing up for what ended up as two weekend benders for pretty much the whole city. EVERYONE from store owners to cab drivers made out in costume glory and I felt like I was dipping into that scene from E.T when babs go to collect candy- you know the one. Again, another dripping morsel of culture for the Brit. The penultimate weekend was upon us and one of the big outdoor parties, Monster Massive, played host to the legendary Z-Trip and I was excited to join the crew along with beat-boxing genius vocalist and UK homie, Killa Kela to pre-game in the trailer before the show as Z-Trip got ready for what was going to be a rocking set following Glitch Mob.

Kela was prepping to jump up and as for the rest of us, well, we had a merry old time and what a great crew we had to stir up some pre-show buzzzzz. Shout outs to Ami Drum, Jose, Matthew, Muckley, Bobbie and of course Zach and Kels.

The master of mash-ups sat for a moment in preparation to rage the stage as the countdown started. Being the avid new DJ in training I was observing the process and noting the equipment in comparison to my set-up. I definitely had my geek on, forget trick or treat I was totally in my element- kid in a candy store for sure.

We joined Glitch Mob, with special guest Travis Barker, for their set before Z-Trip jumped on to lay the foundations for carnage. His set was way more eclectic than i’d have anticipated. The boy had moves and I just wish you could all have been there to hear it. Killa Kela killed it as he unleashed his UK styles on the LA crowd rendering the whole set far too short and way too explosive to be over already- in my opinion and evidently that of the crowd. One saving grace mind you, the generous Mr Z-Trip has encouraged us to go and load up early for christmas with free downloads from his dedicated site www.djztrip.com/downloads.html so fill up your stockings and share the love. There is a ton of music there so GET IN!!! You’ll also find some pin-up-esque press shots to fill your lockers/ shrines. As for me, I’ll keep my fingers crossed in the hope that I can persuade Zach to give me a DJ lesson one of these days. I’m looking forward to Killa Kela’s return to LA in December, more on THAT in the new year. and finally, as the sun goes down I will get my party on to the next Brit adventure and report back in due course. Until next time my darlings

House Party 7….The Haunted House Party….in 3D

The Dead Kennedys

The Dead Kennedys

You know the script, a group of good looking teenagers (OK, OK, we might not be either) are holed up in a basement with the doors locked. Fear grips them as they don’t know what the next few hours will bring. News has got through that over 500 dribbling, zombies will descend on them and the tension is palpable. Nope, not the synopsis to Scream or one of them films but us an hour before the Haunted House Party kicked off.

Horror Nurses

Good Time Girls

Good Time Girls

Ironically, everyone else seemed too scared to have their halloween party on the actual day but it just didn’t seem right. So, Sunday 31st October was the night – the garden was transformed into a graveyeard and we knew who we had to ring to come play some records. The Horrors were amongst our favourite DJs and to get them for halloween was a like a zombie – a no brainer. OK, maybe zombies do have brains but they are usually oozing out of their ears.

The Horrors

The Horrors

We had only just got everything back oop to Manchester from our escapades in London and Ken brought over his lasers and dry ice machines and his DVDs of the Evil Dead and The Excorcist to set the tone.We were holed up all day in basement of The Ruby Lounge like the afore mentioned in a slasher movie – waiting for them , not knowing. We knew they’d be coming but we just didn’t know how scary they would look, we heard an hour before the doors creaked open that there would be 500 of them. All the tickets had gone, this was going to get messy and we’re not just talking fake blood.

Shireen on the Dance Floor

Shireen on the Dance Floor

As well as The Horrors we had Douglas Hart from The Jesus and Mary Chain and some of our old friends to help and from the doors opening at 9pm they arrived in search of blood and the dancefloor – zombie nurses, check. Bloke from Halloween, check. Freddie Kruger, check. Shrek (eh?), check. We were glad we’d got the face paints and fancy dress out ourselves as everyone had made such an effort. Luke French kicked things off and ushered in the sounds of Ibiza to go with the sites of a graveyard. Some things are so wrong they are right and everyone took to the dance floor. In true house party style is wasn’t even haf ten yet but we’ve always done things a bit differently.

Our old friends from The Kings Arms sent over the Witchy Bitches to start procedings and before we knew it the wardrobes were being plundered and the severed mannequin body parts were used as dance partners – Lowline took to the decks and everything from The Brian Jonestown Massacre to Primal Scream had everyone shaking their booties in the fog.  And talking of fog and booties, they came together in perfect harmony at dead on midnight – those vampires on True Blood n’that scrub up pretty well but none of them could hold a candle to Cherie Bebe – all those that weren’t in a trance before she sidled onto the dancefloor sure were by the time she finished. Those that knew there was going to be vampire burlesque looked might please and those that didn’t were picking their jaws up from the floor. Not sure how much of that foaming at the mouth and dribbling was from the joke shop but like an apparition she was disappeared as quickly as she arrived but won’t be forgotten for a long time.

The Witchy Bitches

The Witchy Bitches

The Horrors had brought Luke from one of the scariest bands around, Flats, and Dom from Kreeps showed up too with a box of singles ranging from psyche to rockabilly and the dancefloor stayed rammed.

Relaxing in the Bedroom

Relaxing in the Bedroom

Dave Haslam had seen some wide eyed freaks shaking their thang from over 450 DJ gigs at The Hacienda but rarely were they wearing scrubs, covered in blood or wielding blades for fingers – Juicy brought enough helpings of both hip and hop to ensure the seven hours just flew by.

Rich Reason had played to a packed Warehouse Project less than 12 hours before but kept things going well into Monday morning with Stand By Me being our pick of the moments of the night – The Good Vibrations gang brought their Motown goodness and it was hard to tell where the make up started and finished on the gathered freaks. We’ve seen our friends in some states but this had something of the Benjamin Button about it. Rick Lees arrived looking undead and grey and dribbling but as the make up wore off he started to look more human – as ever playing some of the best tunes of the night and heading to a party afterwards with us that was in full swing at 6am Monday morning.

The body count was pretty high but so was the list of survivors – like the inexplicable ending to a cheap film, the sun came up and we emerged, blinking into the sunlight. Some bus hourneys home were difficult as we were covered in gore while everyone was heading to work.

Luke Opened the Night

Luke Opened the Night

They didn’t know what we’d been through and what we’d done for the sake of the human race. We didn’t want thanks and we disappeared into the new day, knowing there would be a sequel but not daring to believe how scary that would be….
